Lately, I’ve been obsessed with burgers (I know, not very womanly). Fortunately, with the number of burger trucks popping up in Western Sydney, dinner has been an easy task. However, as the burger trucks only open for dinner, the only option for burgers before 6pm has been the dreaded golden arches (which I’ve decided to boycott).
Well, I’m pleased to say, I’ve finally found a solution for these pre-dinner burger cravings at Black Elk Espresso in Carnes Hill! Best of all, it’s not just the burgers that are great, everything else I’ve had on the menu has not disappointed.
No matter how much I eat over the course of a meal, there’s always room for dessert! Especially when it’s something that is as well thought out and delicately made as the desserts at Koi Dessert Bar.
The desserts at Koi are so well-made, anyone that has ever seen them would have to agree, they are a work of art! I always find myself unconsciously taking small spoonfuls, as somehow, eating it any other way would feel barbaric. When you look down at these beautiful morsels of sugary goodness, you will forget that diet you are suppose to be on and instead, be focused on how to best dig in with the least amount of destruction.
This year we were fortunate enough to be invited to experience the Sydney Royal Easter Show on the second day of opening. It was the Friday before public school holidays, which meant the show was not crowded at all. In fact a lot of people we saw walking around seemed to be filming and taking photos for media purposes, much like us.
We spent a good 6 hours at the show wandering around, exploring and, of course, eating lots of food!
Here’s how we tackled this year’s Easter show and a few tips on how to make the best of your day. Of course, we couldn’t possibly see, do and eat everything at the show, so use our experience as a bit of inspiration, but make sure to check out the official website to see what else is on offer.
This week, the dim sum-lovers over at “Let’s Do Yum Cha” have parked their food truck and taken over the rooftop kitchen at Hillside Hotel in Castle Hill. Open from 12pm-9pm until April 2nd – this means Yum Cha for lunch and dinner…anyone?
Just as we started to get sick of all the hipster cafes with 5 items on their menu, that charge a fortune to add a slice of avocado and drinks that cost almost the same as a meal, we were invited to try out Beanie Cafe. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a cafe with such an extensive menu.

Beanie Cafe is your local old school style cafe, even though it’s only been around for 3 months. No fancy renovations, no expensive furniture – just simple no frills good food! Plus, prices are cheaper than many other cafes. They offer a $10 lunch special as well as 10% off for WSU students. If you attend WSU, the cafe is just on the other side of the road.
AK and I have been complaining for a while about the lack of a good Japanese restaurant in South Western Sydney. After a lot of searching, we recently started turning reluctantly to Hero Sushi in Wetherill Park Stocklands for our sushi fix as it’s been the only half-decent sushi train in the area we’ve come across. But, we knew we couldn’t depend on it in the long run, so we continued our search.
Finally, today we decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise!
We noticed when Yukiguni first opened in Cabramatta, but didn’t have high hopes for it (as experience has proven). We also walked past numerous times and peered in like little kids at a candy store, but the lack of appetising dishes circling the belt ended up turning us away. Finally, today we decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise! At $3.30 a dish (standard sushi), this may be our new favourite sushi place in the area.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you must have noticed by now, the growing popularity of food trucks. Popping up in random locations, rotating menus, live music and personalised orders are all rewards for going on what we like to call a “Food Truck Hunt“.
…I was so thankful to finally find the local answer to my burger addiction.
Living in Western Sydney, it is always a struggle to find good quality local food. So, when I was introduced to Holy Heffa a couple months ago, I was so thankful to finally find the local answer to my burger addiction. The best thing about Holy Heffa is it has a permanent location in the parking lot of Fred’s, a local grocer. So, when those sudden burger cravings arise, I know exactly where to go! (Holy Heffa is open Thurs-Sunday 6pm – 10pm, outside of those hours I’m screwed).

Tucked away in a side alley on John St, Battambang Cambodian Restaurant is an homage to the town of Battambang, the capital of the Battambang province in Cambodia. Battambang serves delicious authentic Cambodian food with a few Vietnamese and Chinese dishes mixed into the menu. Let me tell you now, NOTHING I have ordered on the menu so far has failed me, that’s how good this place is.
